Thursday, November 20, 2008, 08:00

Plans have been approved to build a hospice in Walsall – bringing to an end a 30-year battle by campaigners.

Walsall Council's Planning and Development Control Committee passed the plans on Tuesday evening, allowing for building work to being on the 12-bed hospice and day care centre on the former Goscote Hospital site.

"This is the best news I've had in four-and-a-half years in the job," said NHS Walsall chief executive Paul Jennings.

Terry Robshaw, director of operations at Walsall Hospice, said: "It is the final hurdle passed and it is great news for the people of Walsall."

The multi-million pound site will also include a care unit for dementia patients and is set to open in 2010.
