Pics boss happy with super start

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 08:00

Rushall Olympic boss Paul Holleran is hoping his promotion-hunting side can continue to attract more fans to Dales Lane.

Saturday's 2-0 win over Glapwell consolidated Rushall's second spot in the UniBond League First Division South.

They lie four points behind leaders Carlton Town with just one automatic spot up for grabs – but Olympic do have three games in hand.

Holleran told Advertiser Sport: "There's a bit of a buzz about the place at the moment and we want to keep on the front foot.

"There are definitely a few more people coming along here and our profile has crept up a bit over the last 12 months.

"We seem to be getting it right on the pitch and with the attendances creeping up too, it creates a knock-on effect."

The Pics were moved across to the UniBond League from the Southern League during the summer because of grassroots restructuring.

Holleran added: "The aim was always to compete and it's been a bit up and down but if you look at the league table it's been a solid start.

"It's a good league with competitive teams all the way down – you don't get games like we did in the Southern League last year, where we were winning 6-0, 7-0, 8-0.

"We've got ourselves in a decent position as we head towards Christmas but we have two massive games in the next two weeks.

"November has been a tough month for us with four games against teams in the top six.

"But we have picked up six points so far against Stocksbridge and Glapwell and hopefully we can push on against Shepshed (away) on Saturday and Retford (home) next weekend.

"There are a lot of sides who will fancy their chances still but I really thought that if I could add one or two players we could reach the play-offs again like last year."

The Pics also progressed into the Birmingham Senior Cup quarter-finals with a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night – turn to page 69 for more.

● Rushall are appealing for help from local clubs and footballers in their 'Boots for Africa' charity initiative that will see football equipment shipped out to the needy.

Anyone that can provide boots – which must be in decent condition – can call Peter Athersmith on 07909 792422.

The club are also hosting a Sportsman's Evening on Wednesday, December 3 with special guests former Wolves star Steve Daley plus comedian Ian 'Sludge' Lees.

The evening will take place at the club's Dales Lane base, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost £35 plus VAT or £350 for a table of ten. For more details, call Terry Brumpton on 07771 802048.
