Jon Whitney insists he is relishing the selection dilemmas that his new-found free-scoring Saddlers have handed him.

Whitney’s Walsall head into an away double-header at Bristol Rovers and Rotherham this week with a host of players vying for attacking roles.

Burnley loanee Daniel Agyei netted on his Walsall debut in the 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle, impressing alongside Amadou Bakayoko.

But the Saddlers also have West Bromwich Albion man Tyler Roberts – who starred on his Walsall debut in the 3-3 fightback against Bradford a week earlier – returning from international duty with Wales under-21s.

With Simeon Jackson and Agyei’s fellow deadline day addition, winger Zeli Ismail – on loan from Bury – also in the mix, Whitney might have a tough time keeping them all happy.

But the Saddlers boss insists he needs some options heading into a busy few weeks, where Walsall play eight games in 25 days, starting with this week’s double away trip.

Whitney said: “It’s a long season. We’ve got a lot of games coming through September now so they will all be used.

“The energy we want from our attacking players, sometimes we will have to change one, sometimes we may even flip two or three if we need to get a goal.

“Now I have the options to do that and the players we have can all play in different areas.

“Zeli can possibly come on and play in that pocket or he can play up top. Tyler can play out wide. We’ve got Flo Cuvelier still waiting – no one mentions Flo, who is an incredible player.

“He’s waiting for his chance now. That’s what we need. We need to be competitive and we need energy on the pitch – and goals. And there’s goals all over the pitch now, so we’ve got really good attributes moving forward.

“We have had a hell of a shift the first five games but now we can settle a little bit as we’ve got ourselves into a good position in the top ten.

“We can look upwards now and see if we can start to build on this run.”

To do so, Walsall will need to sort out a poor away record – no win on the road since Boxing Day – that is at odds with their sparkling home form in 2017.

Whitney, though, believes the away results will come, given the belief around the camp, adding: “There’s a really good energy about the place.

“The players I have targeted and brought in are players who are willing to scrap when it’s not that pretty, and then they get the chance to play when they’ve done the hard stuff.”
